Why is it important to follow the rhythms of nature, eat seasonally, and practice seasonal routines?

Us human beings tend to forget that we are part of Nature. Whatever natural forces affect our surroundings directly affect us in more ways than we tend to be aware of. Seasons are one of the most obvious ways we experience dramatic natural shifts.

If we ignore these seasonal changes and decide to go with our own rhythm, like eating heavy foods in the summer, eating watermelon in winter, and wearing light clothing in cold weather, we can affect our digestion, start feeling tired, and eventually affect our mood, our health, and overall wellbeing.

You have no idea how to live and eat seasonally? Simple! Just think of qualities.

Qualities? Yes, we experience the world in coexisting opposite qualities. It’s how we understand and feel our outside and inner world. It’s hot or it’s cold, it’s rough or it’s smooth, it’s dry or it’s moist, it’s heavy or it’s light, it’s cloudy or it’s clear, I’m feeling sharp or I’m feeling mellow...etc.

This is how nature stays in balance.

In Ayurveda there is a very important principle: opposites bring balance while like attracts like creating more imbalance. Working with these qualities is a very powerful tool which can help us stay in balance and harmony with nature and ultimately feel as good as we can through our ever changing  environment.

What qualities should I be paying attention to?

Qualities of the climate, qualities of the weather, the food we’re eating, anything we consume (including creams and oils), and finally the qualities of our own body and mind.

Summer

Summer has just arrived with its unique set of qualities: The earth being closer to the sun creates high temperatures, sharpness in the atmosphere and humidity.

Everyone’s experience of summer is distinct based on the qualities of their body and mind. Some enjoy the heat and find themselves more active and outgoing, while others who are hot in nature tend to get more irritated and try to avoid the midday sun at all costs.

Altering our lifestyle and diet to be in tune with summer will have immense benefits on our body and mind:

Healthy digestion, good sleep, less irritation, balanced mood, balanced energy, and good immunity. All of which will allow us to reap the goodness that summer has to offer.

What are some of the signs that we’re going out of balance in the summer

  • Excess irritability

  • Acid reflux every now and then

  • Heartburn every now and then

  • Uneven energy during the day

  • Skin rashes

  • General inflammation

  • Acne

  • Not withstanding heat

  • Waking up during the night and/or difficulty falling asleep
